One of the things I set out to do when I started this furniture painting series was to offer you guys as many alternatives and try out as many different products to chose from! There are so many options when it comes to making over furniture. There are countless brands of paints. As well as so many differing opinions on what products to use for prep and finishing it can be overwhelming. Today I am here to help a very specific problem! That is how to degrease furniture as well as deep clean those extra grimy second hand pieces. Ive come across enough pieces as I’ve made over furniture to know that many are in rough condition when they get to your home. That means you need to figure out how to even get to a point where you can start prepping!
Disclosure I did receive this product for free from Mineral Fusion Paint and was compensated. However I reached out to them myself, because I thought this would be a great option for furniture prep and wanted to share it with you guys! I would have just as easily paid for it if they had not so graciously agreed to work with me! Regardless of being compensated I promise to only give you a complete and honest review of their TSP. If I think its not worth your time or other products may work better I will be sure to let you know just that! If I think its amazing and something you can’t live with out I’ll let you know that too!

So for starters let me explain the project I used this for. I used this on a antique dresser given to me by my grandmother. This piece was very very old and had some oil residue build up from what I assume is a furniture polish or wax of some sort. Making it have a bit of a tacky feel.
Before I went in with the tsp I decided to sand first. If I were to do this over I would recommend actually using the TSP first and sanding second and then going back over with either warm water or TSP again! Just a heads up if you’re not sure which order to use this product in your prep process either!

I was particularly drawn to this product because it is not a harsh chemical and is going to be much safer for you to use!
How to Use TSP
Let me start by saying the small bottle you get when you order which is 250ML is actually very misleading! You dilute this solution so a little will go far!
How to Mix TSP Before Using
Start by filling a bowl or container you can easily dip your rag or sponge into with 1 liter of water. Then measure and pour two cap fulls of TSP into your water. I then used a whisk to really get everything combined well. At this point it got bubbly and I knew it was ready!
How to Clean Your Furniture with TSP
I used an old rag. If your furniture is any bit as dirty as mine is I would suggest picking something you won’t mind tossing when you’re done. I then very simply saturated and wrung out my rag and started scrubbing my dresser drawers. I was impressed by how much gunk came off and just how soft and clean everything felt as I began to wipe the entire dresser down. One of the things I liked most was that its a great way to get into those little nooks and crannies!
The dresser I was working on had small lined grooves in each of the drawers a small area impossible for me to really reach with my sander. Since I could easily saturate it with the rag and wipe clean it was a great way to really prep these difficult to reach areas! In fact its something I plan to use again on other pieces for this reason moving forward.
once everything was wiped thoroughly it was time to let it dry. This only took a few minutes.
My Honest Opinion of TSP after Using it To Degrease Furniture
As I began to use TSP I was a little skeptical I thought it seemed more like water. That being the case I wasnt convinced that it would do very much. ?Quickly I realized that this is a wonderful product to deep clean any project before painting. I always sand my pieces before I paint. Its safe to say that from now on I will wipe them clean with this instead of just water like I had in the past.
Another thing I really like is that even though the bottle isn’t huge you dilute such a small amount in a liter of water. That means it will last through many projects before you run out!
The greasy tacky feel is gone with this product! ?So it definitely does work as a degreaser.
As I mentioned above this is also a great way to clean and de gunk and prep the small detailed areas you can’t reach with a sander!
In conclusion yes I would 100% recommend this product to you. I think it will be a product I regularly reach for. It will be perfect ? as I clean my pieces right before I go in to paint. Before I just wiped everything down with a damp rag but this did an even better job!
I hope you guys enjoyed this review and tutorial and it shows you another way to help prep your furniture!
