I am driving home from a wonderful long weekend in San Diego as write this post! We found out last Friday that my son Tristan?s surgery was officially scheduled for July 2nd. It seemed the best way to deal with this impeding surgery and recovery was to take a quick trip to the beach! So that?s exactly what we did.
Creating Memories
I have to say I am very thankful to have a husband who values a good time and gets this homebody out of the house even when I?m feeling like leaving my comfort zone is the last thing I want to do. It was a fun trip and I hope we created some everlasting memories for our kids. That perhaps the fun memories from this summer will out shine the hard ones to come.
Tristan
We?ve done surgeries with Tristan before. Five in fact. He was born with some abnormalities with his bladder and urological make up. That journey to correct the issues he was born with and get him healthy lasted till he was nearly four. During those years he battled constant infections and was in and out of the hospital for different procedures. Constantly being prescribed antibiotics and it wasn?t all smooth sailing.
It was November right before Thanksgiving when he had his last procedure.
It was a gamble, we had no idea if this 5thsurgery would even work. His first corrective surgery happened when he was one and unfortunately it failed. That put us on a path of several delicate surgeries involving grafts to fix the issues. Each of these surgeries had a pretty intense recovery and we were desperately hoping that we were nearing the end of the road.
We had a lot of faith in his doctor that this 5th procedure would be the last one and that Tristan would finally be healthy. We lived with that peace and comfort and rode the high that it was indeed a successful outcome for several years.
Having Faith in Hard Moments
I am thankful every day for how Tristan?s health journey has played out. Instead of being bitter that he now needs another surgery for an unrelated issue, I?m really just thankful. Thankful for 2 years of bliss when he was healthy and all seemed well.
Tristan has always been a fighter. We knew his life would be different before he was even born. We were prepared that his physical trials in this life would be more complex. Even so had I been told the day he was born all that his journey would entail. I?d have struggled a lot more than I have.
This journey has taught me an awful lot. But the biggest lesson its taught me is that the Lord really and truly does have a plan.
We?ve been fortunate to get to slowly ease our way into discovering the many layers of Tristan?s health. A journey quite frankly that is still unraveling. ?It?s made the overwhelming amount of appointments and specialists seem a lot less cumbersome. It?s made me feel like I can handle each next step in the process to get him as healthy as he can be. For that I am forever thankful.
It?s also a huge testament that the Lord knows me individually. That he knows my heart and he truly does know what I can handle.
Little Big Miracles
It also makes me marvel at the miracle of our bodies created in the God?s image. One of the most miraculous things to behold is how the body leaves us clues to pin point what may be ailing us. That something so simple as a crease, fold or birth mark can be a literal sign pointing us to look further and discover what?s unseen.
The little markers and clues along Tristans back have been simple but precious blessings that this is where we should look. Indicators that I truly feel were messages from God saying here is where you will find more answers. Who knew a little cute ?crooked bum and birthmark would be an answer to prayers?
Thankful For Trials
I am thankful for the trials in my life. They help me see the bigger picture. When I sometimes want to get lost in the details I try to step back and see the wider scope. This moment as we prepare for another surgery sometimes feels overwhelming. But I know it?s just another step in our journey.
I know that in a week or even a month when I look back the bigger plan will be even more visible to my eyes. All truly will be well.
